Getting to Know Your Nikon D50
The Nikon D50 is a fantastic DSLR camera with full manual controls. Learning where everything is and what it does will help you take better photos faster. This guide covers the main controls, buttons, and how to use them effectively.

🎛️ Top Panel Controls
Mode Dial
Large dial on top left. Switches between shooting modes: Auto, P, S, A, M, and scene modes.
Shutter Button
Half-press to focus and meter, full press to take the photo. Also turns the camera on when pressed.
Command Dial
Rear dial by your thumb. Changes shutter speed in S and M modes, aperture in A mode, and other settings.
Power Switch
On/Off switch located around the shutter button. Turn clockwise to power on.

Multi-Selector
Four-way pad for navigating menus and selecting focus points. Press center to confirm selections.
MENU Button
Opens the camera menu system where you can adjust all settings.
Playback Button (▶)
Review photos you've taken. Press again to exit playback mode.
Delete Button (🗑)
Delete photos during playback. Press once, then confirm with multi-selector.
Zoom In/Out Buttons
During playback, zoom in to check focus or zoom out to see thumbnails.
Info Button (i)
Shows shooting information on the LCD screen.
📸 Shooting Mode Dial
The mode dial lets you choose how much control you have over the camera:

⚙️ Important Settings & Buttons
ISO Button: Hold and rotate command dial to change ISO (200-1600 on D50).
White Balance (WB) Button: Hold and rotate command dial to adjust white balance for different lighting.
Flash Pop-up Button: Side button that raises the built-in flash when needed.
AF/MF Switch: On the lens. Switch between Auto Focus and Manual Focus.
Focus Mode Selector: Inside the camera near the lens mount. Choose between Single (S), Continuous (C), or Manual (M) focus.
📝 How to Change Key Settings:
To change ISO:
- Press and hold the ISO button (left side of camera)
- Rotate the command dial while holding the button
- Watch the LCD panel on top to see the ISO value change
- Release the ISO button when you've selected your desired value
To change aperture in Manual (M) mode:
- Set mode dial to M
- Press and hold the +/- button (near shutter button)
- Rotate command dial while holding the button
- Watch the f-stop value change in the viewfinder and LCD
To change shutter speed in Manual (M) mode:
- Set mode dial to M
- Rotate command dial (without holding any buttons)
- Watch the shutter speed value change in the viewfinder and LCD
💡 Quick Tips for the D50:
- Check your settings: Half-press the shutter button to wake up the camera and see current settings in the viewfinder
- Focus points: The D50 has 5 focus points. Use the multi-selector to choose which one to use
- Exposure meter: Look in the viewfinder - the scale with + and 0 and - shows if your image will be over or under exposed
- Battery life: Turn off the camera when not in use to save battery (unlike phones, DSLRs use very little power when on but not shooting)
- Format your card: Use the menu to format (not just delete) your SD card regularly for best performance
