🎓 Mini-Lesson: Making Words Plural
What are Plurals?
A plural means more than one of something. We change singular (one) words into plural (more than one) words by following special rules!
Rule 1: Most Words
Just add 's'
cat → cats
dog → dogs
book → books
tree → trees
Rule 2: Words ending in s, ss, x, z, ch, sh
Add 'es'
bus → buses
glass → glasses
box → boxes
church → churches
dish → dishes
buzz → buzzes
Rule 3: Words ending in consonant + y
Change 'y' to 'ies'
baby → babies
city → cities
party → parties
fly → flies
But if there's a vowel before the y, just add 's': boy → boys, key → keys
Rule 4: Words ending in f or fe
Change 'f/fe' to 'ves'
leaf → leaves
knife → knives
wolf → wolves
life → lives
Exception: Some just add 's' like chief → chiefs, roof → roofs
Rule 5: Words ending in consonant + o
Usually add 'es'
potato → potatoes
tomato → tomatoes
hero → heroes
echo → echoes
Exception: Musical words just add 's': piano → pianos, photo → photos
⚠️ Irregular Plurals: Some words don't follow the rules!
child → children
man → men
woman → women
mouse → mice
tooth → teeth
foot → feet
sheep → sheep
fish → fish
💡 Remember: Think about how the word ends, then choose the right rule!
