🎓 Mini-Lesson: How to Round Numbers

What is Rounding?

Rounding makes numbers simpler by changing them to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, or more. We use rounding to make numbers easier to work with!

🔑 The Golden Rule:
Look at the digit to the RIGHT of the place you're rounding to:
  • If it's 5 or more → Round UP
  • If it's less than 5 → Round DOWN
Example 1: Round 347 to the nearest 10

Step 1: Find the tens digit → 4
Step 2: Look at the digit to the right → 7
Step 3: Is 7 five or more? YES! So round UP
Step 4: 347 rounds to 350
347 is closer to 350
340
347
350
Example 2: Round 5,832 to the nearest 100

Step 1: Find the hundreds digit → 8
Step 2: Look at the digit to the right → 3
Step 3: Is 3 less than 5? YES! So round DOWN
Step 4: 5,832 rounds to 5,800
Example 3: Round 23,456 to the nearest 1000

Step 1: Find the thousands digit → 3
Step 2: Look at the digit to the right → 4
Step 3: Is 4 less than 5? YES! So round DOWN
Step 4: 23,456 rounds to 23,000

💡 Remember: When rounding, all digits after your rounding place become zeros!
