๐ Mini-Lesson: How to Simplify Fractions
What does Simplifying mean?
Simplifying a fraction means making it as simple as possible by dividing the top (numerator) and bottom (denominator) by the same number. It's like making the numbers smaller while keeping the fraction the same size!
These fractions are all the same:
4
8
=
2
4
=
1
2
โ Simplest form!
๐ Steps to Simplify a Fraction:
- Find a number that divides into BOTH the top and bottom
- Divide both numbers by that number
- Check if you can simplify further
- Stop when you can't divide anymore
Example 1: Simplify 6/12
Step 1: What divides into both 6 and 12? โ 2, 3, or 6
Let's use 6 (the biggest!):
Step 2: Divide top and bottom by 6:
6 รท 6 = 1
12 รท 6 = 2
Step 3: Can we simplify 1/2 further? No!
Answer: 6/12 = 1/2 โ
Let's use 6 (the biggest!):
Step 2: Divide top and bottom by 6:
6 รท 6 = 1
12 รท 6 = 2
Step 3: Can we simplify 1/2 further? No!
Answer: 6/12 = 1/2 โ
Example 2: Simplify 8/20
Step 1: What divides into both 8 and 20? โ 2 or 4
Let's use 4:
Step 2: Divide both by 4:
8 รท 4 = 2
20 รท 4 = 5
Step 3: Can we simplify 2/5 further? No!
Answer: 8/20 = 2/5 โ
Let's use 4:
Step 2: Divide both by 4:
8 รท 4 = 2
20 รท 4 = 5
Step 3: Can we simplify 2/5 further? No!
Answer: 8/20 = 2/5 โ
Example 3: Simplify 10/15
Step 1: What divides into both 10 and 15? โ 5
Step 2: Divide both by 5:
10 รท 5 = 2
15 รท 5 = 3
Answer: 10/15 = 2/3 โ
Step 2: Divide both by 5:
10 รท 5 = 2
15 รท 5 = 3
Answer: 10/15 = 2/3 โ
๐ก Top Tips:
- Always divide BOTH numbers by the same amount
- Use the biggest number that divides into both (called the HCF)
- If you can't find a number that divides both, the fraction is already in simplest form!
- Remember your times tables - they really help!
๐ฏ Check: A fraction is in its simplest form when the only number that divides into both the top and bottom is 1!
โ๏ธ Practice Questions
Simplify each fraction to its simplest form. Write your answer as a fraction (e.g. 1/2)
