๐ Mini-Lesson: Understanding Division
What is Division?
Division is sharing things equally or grouping things.
It's the opposite of multiplication!
๐ช Let's Start with a Real Example
๐ The Bus Stop Method
When numbers get bigger, we use the "bus stop" method (also called long division). It's called this because the division sign looks like a bus stop!
__ 3 ) 12
This means: 12 รท 3
(The number outside is what we're dividing BY)
(The number inside is what we're dividing UP)
๐ง Memory Trick
Dad, Mum, Sister, Brother
Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down
๐ The 4 Steps (DMSB)
- DIVIDE: How many times does the number go in?
- MULTIPLY: Multiply your answer by the divisor
- SUBTRACT: Take away to find what's left
- BRING DOWN: Bring down the next digit and repeat!
๐ VERY SIMPLE EXAMPLE: 12 รท 3
Step 1: DIVIDE - How many 3s go into 1?
None! (1 is too small)
So look at 12 together.
How many 3s go into 12? โ 4 (because 3 ร 4 = 12)
4
3 ) 12
Step 2: MULTIPLY - Multiply 4 ร 3
4
3 ) 12
- 12 (4 ร 3 = 12)
Step 3: SUBTRACT - Take 12 away from 12
4
3 ) 12
- 12
----
0 (Nothing left!)
โ Answer: 12 รท 3 = 4
๐ EASY EXAMPLE: 48 รท 4
Let's work through this together!
Step 1: DIVIDE
How many 4s go into 4? โ 1
1_
4 ) 48
Step 2: MULTIPLY
1 ร 4 = 4
1_
4 ) 48
- 4
Step 3: SUBTRACT
4 - 4 = 0
1_
4 ) 48
- 4
---
0
Step 4: BRING DOWN
Bring down the 8
1_
4 ) 48
- 4
---
08
Now repeat! How many 4s go into 8? โ 2
12
4 ) 48
- 4
---
08
- 8 (2 ร 4 = 8)
---
0 (Nothing left!)
โ Answer: 48 รท 4 = 12
โ Check your answer: Does 4 ร 12 = 48? YES! โ
๐ WITH A REMAINDER: 25 รท 4
Sometimes there's a bit left over - that's called a REMAINDER!
How many 4s go into 2? โ 0 (too small!)
How many 4s go into 25? โ 6 (because 4 ร 6 = 24)
6
4 ) 25
- 24 (6 ร 4 = 24)
----
1 (1 left over!)
โ Answer: 25 รท 4 = 6 remainder 1
This means: If you share 25 sweets between 4 people,
each person gets 6 sweets, with 1 sweet left over!
๐ก Top Tips for Success!
- Always start from the LEFT
- If a number is too small, include the next digit
- Write your answer ABOVE the line
- The remainder must ALWAYS be smaller than the divisor
- CHECK your answer by multiplying back!
